Abstract

Skin health disorders such as acne and allergies were often considered minor issues, yet they had serious psychological impacts and could affect the sufferers' quality of life. This community service activity aimed to increase public understanding and awareness in choosing the right and safe therapies to overcome acne and skin allergies. The method used was a combination of two-way persuasive micro-education (2–3 minutes duration) and the distribution of information media in the form of leaflets. The activity was conducted in the open public space of the Car Free Day (CFD) area in Surakarta City, involving 41 visitors from various professional backgrounds as active participants. The results of the activity showed positive responses and high enthusiasm from the participants during the interactive discussion session. It was concluded that handling these skin problems required a comprehensive approach that integrated self-management, healthy lifestyle changes, and medication interventions. Through this education, participants gained an increased understanding of the limits of using over-the-counter medications for acne (such as free benzoyl peroxide) and allergy medications (first and second-generation antihistamines), as well as the importance of using doctor's prescriptions for prescription-only drug categories (such as retinoids, topical antibiotics, and corticosteroid combinations) to avoid the risk of side effects and drug resistance. This activity successfully encouraged changes in public behavior to become more cautious, selective, and wise in choosing therapies to maintain skin health.
